Psychosomatic medicine may be defined as a comprehensive, interdisciplinary framework for assessment of psychological factors affecting individual vulnerability as well as course and outcome of illness; bio psychosocial consideration of patient care in clinical practice; specialist interventions to integrate psychological therapies in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of medical disease. Simply stated, psychosomatic medicine is an interdisciplinary medical field exploring the relationships among social, psychological, and behavioral factors on bodily processes and quality of life in humans and animals. Psychosomatic medicine integrates interdisciplinary evaluation and management involving diverse specialties including psychiatry, psychology, neurology, internal medicine, surgery, allergy, dermatology and psychoneuroimmunology.
