Iron overload

Hemochromatosis is also called as iron overload, a disorder where too much iron builds up in the body. The most important causes are hereditary haemochromatosis (HHC), a genetic disorder, and transfusional iron overload, which can result from repeated blood transfusions. The excess iron is stored in the bodys tissues and organs, particularly the skin, heart, liver, pancreas, and joints. Because humans cannot increase the excretion of iron, excess iron can overload and eventually damage tissues and organs. Symptoms of hemochromatosis include:

  •           Lack of energy
  •           Abdominal (belly) pain
  •           Loss of sex drive
  •           Loss of body hair
  •           Heart flutters
  •           Memory fog
  •           Weight loss
  •           Weakness
  •           Abnormal coloring of the skin
