Renal tubular acidosis

Renal tubular acidosis is a rare genetic condition that results in problems with kidney function, bone formation, hearing, and managing potassium, calcium, and pH levels in the body. Without proper treatment, chronic acidity of the blood leads to growth retardation, kidney stones, bone disease, chronic kidney disease, and possibly total kidney failure. In renal physiology, when blood is filtered by the kidney, the filtrate passes through the tubules of the nephron, allowing for exchange of salts, acid equivalents, and other solutes before it drains into the bladder as urine.
