Neonatal Nursing

Neonatal nursing is a branch of nursing which works on the various problems of newborn infants born with prematurity, birth defects, infection, cardiac malformations, and surgical problems. First month of new born infants is known as neonatal period which is defined as the first month of life. Neonatal nurses helps in IV linings, managing ventilators, assessing vital signs, drawing blood and work with needles, feeding pumps, incubators and ventilators.

Health education is provided by neonatal nurse to the parents of newborn infants in bathing, feeding, and providing care while the newborn is in the hospital.  Empathetic understanding for the parents and other family members, interest in newborn babies, good understanding of the physiological and psychological needs of the new-born are characteristics and skills of a neonatal nurse.
