Gingival Cysts

Gingival cyst is also called as dental lamina cyst. It is a type of cysts of the jaws that originates from the dental lamina and is found in the mouth parts. It is a superficial cyst in the alveolar mucosa. Gingival cysts may occur in newborns and originate from the vestiges of dental lamina that has degenerated. These remnants give rise to the gingival cysts and are lined by epithelium, which is capable of producing keratin. Gingival cyst of adult is an uncommon cyst of gingival soft tissue occurring in either the free or attached gingiva. The incidence of gingival cyst of adult is less than 0.5%. It is most commonly seen in the canine and premolar regions of the mandible, and sometimes confused with lateral periodontal cysts. It is not normally problematic, but it can cause some discomfort when it grows larger. It can be removed by simple surgical excision. They are developed late in life, generally up to the sixth decade of age.
