Dental Trauma

Dental trauma refers to trauma (injury) to the teeth and/or periodontium (gums, periodontal tendon, alveolar bone), and nearby soft tissues, for example, the lips, tongue, etc. The study of dental injury is called dental traumatology. Dental trauma is most common in youthful individuals, representing 17% of wounds to the body in those matured 0– 6 years compared to a normal of 5% over all ages. It is more frequently observed in males compared to females. Traumatic dental injuries are more common in permanent teeth compared to deciduous teeth and usually involve the front teeth of the upper jaw.

Regular use of a mouthguard during games and other high-risk exercises, (for example, military preparing) is the best counteractive action for dental trauma. Custom made mouthguard is ideal as it fits well, gives comfort and sufficient assurance.

The dentistry journal like Dental Research and Management offers a stage for researchers in oral and maxillofacial pathology field and related subjects.
