Odontogenic infection

An odontogenic infection is a contamination that starts inside a tooth or in the nearly encompassing tissues. Odontogenic infections may remain localized to the region where they started, or spread into adjacent or distant areas. It is assessed that 90-95% of all orofacial infection start from the teeth or their supporting structures. Furthermore, about 70% of odontogenic diseases happen as periapical inflammation, i.e. acute periodontitis or a periapical abscess. The next most regular type of odontogenic infection is the periodontal abscess.

Odontogenic sinusitis is inflammation of the paranasal air sinuses. Diseases related with teeth might be in charge of around 20% of cases of maxillary sinusitis.
