Cardiac remodeling is defined as a group of molecular, cellular and interstitial changes that manifest clinically as changes in size, mass, geometry and function of the heart after injury. Cardiac remodeling is generally accepted as a determinant of the clinical course of heart failure.

Cardiac remodeling involves both adaptive and maladaptive phases of development. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have been consistently shown to decrease remodeling in animal models or transmural infarction and chronic pressure overload. Medications may attenuate remodeling.
