Sjögrens syndrome

Degeneration of the salivary and lachrymal glands due to a chronic autoimmune condition leads to dryness of the mouth and eyes is called as sjögrens syndrome.it is an autoimmune disease,  immune system attacks own body parts. Sjögrens syndrome leads to gingivitis (inflammation of gums) due to insufficient production of saliva, which helps to protect teeth from decay and infections around eyes, burn, itch, and feel gritty. Pain and stiffness in joints, swelling in glands, dryness in throat, nose, lips, skin and vagina, inflammation in lungs, liver, kidneys and stomach are some symptoms of this disease. Presence of high level immunoglobulins in blood could be a sign of Sjogrens syndrome.

Cequa, lacrisert and restasis are used for the treatment of dry eyes by releasing of artificial tears.
Cevimeline (Evoxac), supersaturated calcium phosphate rinse (NeutraSal), pilocarpine (Salagen)
are used for the treatment of dry mouth.
