Fractures

Breakage in the bone is called as fracture; it may range from a thin crack to a complete break. It can be crosswise, lengthwise, in several places, or into many pieces. Greenstick, Transverse, Spiral, Oblique, Compression, Comminuted and Segmental are some types of fractures. Pain, Swelling Obvious deformity, Difficulty using or moving, bruising and redness in the injured area are some symptoms of fracture.

Smoking increase the risk of bone fractures and interferes with the healing process, severe disc degeneration, weakened spinal ligaments, reduced production of bone cells, faster bone loss in postmenopausal women, fractures take longer to heal, rotator cuff surgery is less successful, longer healing time for surgical incisions, post-surgery complications, delayed spinal fusion are some orthopedic problems caused by smoking. Splint/cast, medications, traction and surgical methods are used for the treatment of fractures.
