DNA Repair

DNA repair is a process in which cell identifies the damaged DNA and corrects DNA molecule that encode its genome. It provides comprehensive coverage of DNA repair and cellular responses to DNA damage.  DNA repair ensures species survival by enabling parental DNA to be inherited as faithfully as possible by offspring and also preserves the health of an individual. DNA repair processes exist in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The two purine bases, adenine (A) and guanine (G), pair with their pyrimidine counterparts, thymine (T) and cytosine (C) to provide a successful DNA replication.

 Direct reversal of the damage, excision repair, and postreplication repair are three types of repair mechanisms. Direct reversal repair is specific to damage. Excision repair can be specific or nonspecific. Postreplication repair occurs at the downstream of the lesion, as replication is blocked at the actual site of damage.
