Dental Erosion

Dental erosion is also known as Acid erosion. It is a type of tooth wear. An irreversible loss of tooth structure due to chemical dissolution by acids not of bacterial origin is defined as Dental erosion. It is the most common chronic disease of children ages 5–17. Erosion may be caused by intrinsic (e.g., excessive vomiting or acid reflux) and/or extrinsic (e.g., diet) factors. Soft drinks, particularly carbonated sodas and sports drinks, appear to be the most significant extrinsic cause of erosion. Drinks containing high concentrations of calcium, like milk, may reduce risk of erosion. Acid erosion begins initially in the enamel, causing it to become thin, and can progress into dentin, giving the tooth a dull yellow appearance and leading to dentin hypersensitivity.
