Dental Anesthesia

Anesthesia is administered prior to a procedure to reduce or dull the pain or sedate a nervous or anxious patient. Local anesthesia is the most common method meaning that it dulls pain in all or part of the mouth during dental work, but does not cause the patient to go to sleep.

Dental anesthesia is a field of anesthesia that includes not only local anesthetics as well as sedation and general anesthesia. The frequently used local anesthetic in dentistry are lidocaine (also known as xylocaine or lignocaine), a modern replacement for procaine (also called novocaine). Its half-life in the body is about 1.5– 2 hours. Other local anesthetic in current use include articaine (additionally called septocaine or ubistesin), bupivacaine (a long-acting soporific), Prilocaine (also called Citanest), and mepivacaine (also called Carbocaine or Polocaine).
