Tooth Resorption

Tooth resorption is the dynamic loss of dentine and cementum by the activity of osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are the cells responsible for the resorption of the root surface. Osteoclasts can break down bone, cartilage and dentine. Tooth resorption is a physiological procedure in the shedding of the essential dentition, caused by osteoclast differentiation due to weight applied by the erupting permanent tooth. However, in the secondary dentition the process is pathological. The classification of tooth resorption includes external tooth resorption, internal tooth resorption and Transient inflammatory resorption. Adult tooth root resorption is a serious issue that requires immediate action.
