Hemochromatosis
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common complication of iron-overload diseases such as hereditary hemochromatosis. Recently a gene mutation was identified that strongly predisposes individuals towards hemochromatosis when present in homozygous form. Carriers of the HFE C282Y mutation are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Increased type 2 diabetes risk in HFE hemochromatosis is associated with one or more factors, including abnormal iron homeostasis and iron overload, decreased insulin secretion, cirrhosis, diabetes in first-degree relatives, increased body mass index, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome
