The atomic number also known as proton number symbolized by Z. Atoms of each element contain a characteristic number of protons, the number of protons in an atom is called the Atomic number. It is identical to the charge number of the nucleus. The atomic number uniquely identifies a chemical element. In an uncharged atom, the atomic number is also equal to the number of electrons. Each Chemical element on the Periodic table is given a unique Atomic Number.
