Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome is also known as impingement syndrome which is commonly seen in active adults, especially older. It is a common cause of shoulder pain due to injury to the muscles between bones in the shoulder area. These conditions may occur alone or in combination and closely related shoulder bursitis and rotator cuff tendinitis. Shoulder impingement can be very painful and can lead to considerable functional weakness with a full thickness rotator cuff tear. Symptoms include:

·         minor but constant pain in the arm

·         pain that goes from the front of the shoulder to the side of the arm

·         pain that gets worse at night

·         shoulder or arm weakness

·         Pain or clicking when putting your hand behind your back or head.

·         Pain reaching for the seat-belt or across your chest.

The goal of treatment is to reduce pain and restore function. There are many types of treatment available for shoulder impingement, depending on severity.
