Carbonyl Group

A carbonyl group in organic chemistry is defined as a chemically organic functional group composed of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom C=O. It is common to several classes of organic compounds, as part of many larger functional groups. The simplest carbonyl groups are aldehydes and ketones usually attached to another carbon compound. These structures can be found in many aromatic compounds contributing to smell and taste. A compound containing a carbonyl group is often referred to as a carbonyl compound.
