Learning Disabilities

A learning disability is a neurological disorder. Children with learning disabilities are as smart as or smarter than their peers but they may have difficulty to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention. Learning disabilities are common between 8% and 10% of children under age 18.

 Common signs that a person may have learning disabilities include the following:

·         Problems reading and/or writing

·         Problems with math

·         Poor memory

·         Problems paying attention

·         Trouble following directions

·         Clumsiness

·         Trouble telling time

·         Problems staying organized

Common types of learning disabilities are

·         Dyslexia – Difficulty with reading

·         Dyscalculia – Difficulty with math

·         Dysgraphia – Difficulty with writing

·         Dyspraxia (Sensory Integration Disorder) – Difficulty with fine motor skills

·         Dysphasia/Aphasia – Difficulty with language

·        Auditory Processing Disorder – Difficulty hearing differences between sounds

Visual Processing Disorder – Difficulty interpreting visual information
