In genetics, polymorphism is used to describe the multiple or many forms of a single gene of an individual or among a group of individuals. Polymorphism is related to biodiversity, genetic variation, and adaptation. There are two types of polymorphism: silent and visible. Majority of polymorphism are silent, they do not alter the gene function or expression. Some polymorphisms have no visible manifestations and that require biochemical techniques to identify differences that occur between the chromosomes, proteins or DNA of different forms. Gene polymorphisms can be occurring in any region of the genome. The most common example of polymorphism is sexual dimorphism, which occurs in many organisms.
