Takotsubo cardiomyopathy

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy-Broken heart syndrome

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is commonly called as stress cardiomyopathy. This Takotsubo cardiomyopathy comes under non ischemic cardiomyopathy in which there is a sudden temporary weakening of the muscular portion of the heart. This weakening of heart may be due to emotional stress like example death of their parents, loved ones, break up, rejection from a partner or constantly occurring anxiety. The common name for this Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is broken heart syndrome due to this reason only.

This stress cardiomyopathy is now well common syndrome causing to acute heart failure, lethal arrhythmias and ventricular rupture.

The name "takotsubo syndrome” comes from the Japanese word takotsubo “octopus traps," because the left ventricle takes on a shape resembling a fishing pot.

Symptoms:

Chest pain, Difficulty in breathing, nausea, fainting, Anxiety, abnormal heart rhythms.

Causes:

·         Transient Vasospasm

·         Microvascular dysfunction

·         Mid-ventricular obstruction

·         Catecholamine-induced myocyte injury.

Treatment:

ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and beta blockers, are considered mainstays of heart failure treatment.
