A generic drug is a pharmaceutical drug that has exactly the same dosage, intended use, effects, and side effects, route of administration, risks, safety, and strength as the original drug. They are copies of brand-name drugs that have the same chemical substance as the drug that was originally developed, patented and innovated. In other words, their pharmacological effects are exactly the same as those of their brand-name counterparts but it may differ in characteristics such as manufacturing process, formulation, excipients, color, taste, and packaging. Generic drugs are allowed for sale after the expiry of the patent of the original drugs.
