Chondrocalcinosis or cartilage calcification is commonly known as Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Deposition Disease (CPPD). It is a rare condition characterized by the accumulation of calcium, which forms crystals in joint cartilage especially in articular cartilage and fibrocartilage and eventual damage to affected joints. A buildup of these crystals can lead to joint pain and damage that is progressive (worsens over time). Its most typically occurs in older people. The symptoms can be chronic or may occur in sudden episodes.
Chronic joint pain or sudden, recurrent episodes of pain, as well as stiffness or swellings of the joints are the signs and symptoms of the disease. Treatment for Chondrocalcinosis is symptomatic. However, therapies are available to manage the signs and symptoms of the disease like Joint aspiration (draining of fluid from the affected joint), Corticosteroid injections and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin or ibuprofen.
