Heterochromatin

Heterochromatin is a tightly packed form of DNA has multiple varieties. It’s divided into two types they are constitutive heterochromatin and facultative heterochromatin. Both play a role in the expression of genes.

A new role for heterochromatin: changes in the structure of chromosomes are can lead to genetic diseases such as cancer.

Repeated DNA sequence is called chromosomal rearrangements. They are arranged in unique region of the chromosome called the centromere. This tightly-coiled DNA and proteins, can suppress the chromosomal rearrangements. Heterochromatin has been used in gene regulation and in protection of chromosomal function.
