Polymerization is the combination of monomers to form a polymer. It includes three steps initiation, propagation, and termination. The monomer molecules may be same or different. Usually 100 monomers must be combined to make a quality product.

Polymerization can be done in alkenes through radical reactions. But in alkanes it can be done only in the presence of strong acids. If the polymerization did in very short time is known as hazardous polymerization. It can cause fires and explosions.
