An electrode
is a small piece of metal or other substance that is used to take an electric
current to or from a source of power, a piece of equipment, or a living body. Any
terminal that conducts an electric current into or away from various conducting
substances in a circuit, as the anode or cathode in a battery or the carbons in
an arc lamp, or that emits, collects, or controls the flow of electrons in an
electron tube, as the cathode, plate, or grid. (Or) An electrode is a solid
electric conductor that carries electric current into
non-metallic solids, or liquids, or gases, or plasmas, or vacuums.
Electrodes are typically good electric conductors, but they need not be metals.
In an electrochemical
cell, reduction and oxidation reactions take place at the electrodes. The
electrode at which reduction takes places is called the cathode. Oxidation
takes place at the anode. The electrodes are useful in analytical chemistry,
in batteries, and in electrolysis.
