Kidney cancer first appears in the lining of tiny tubes in the kidney. This type of kidney cancer is called renal cell carcinoma. Cancers found in the center of the kidney are known as transitional cell carcinoma. It usually affects adults in their 60s or 70s and is rare in people under 50. It can often be cured if its caught early. But a cure probably wont be possible if its not diagnosed until after it has spread beyond the kidney. When the kidneys are damaged they may not work well. In most cases, some damage wont cause too many problems. But, major damage may need more treatment, like dialysis.
