Marasmus is a form of severe malnutrition characterized by energy deficiency. It happens when the intake of nutrients and energy is too low for a person needs. It leads to wasting, or the loss of body fat and muscle. A child with marasmus may not grow as children usually do. It can occur in anyone who has severe malnutrition, but it usually occurs in children in developing countries. Marasmus can be life-threatening but can be treatable. Marasmus leads to dehydration and weight loss. Starvation is a form of this disorder.
