Lymphocytosis

Lymphocytosis is an increase in the number of lymphocytes in the blood. Lymphocytes are an important part of the immune system. They help fight off diseases, so its normal to see a temporary rise in the number of lymphocytes after an infection. Lymphocytosis is very common. It is especially common in people who have:

  •           Had a recent infection (most commonly viral)
  •           A medical condition that causes long-lasting inflammation, like arthritis
  •           A reaction to a new medication
  •           Severe medical illness, such as trauma
  •           Had their spleen removed
  •           Certain types of cancer, like leukemia or lymphoma
