Psychoactive drugs | Psychiatry Journal | Psychiatry Researches

A psychoactive drug is a chemical substance that primarily acts on brain function and results in alterations in perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, or behavior. The most commonly used legal psychoactive drugs, apart from drugs taken on prescription, are alcohol and tobacco. The most commonly used illegal psychoactive drug is cannabis. Overall, psychoactive drugs, or psychotropic substances, contain four groups. These include stimulants, depressants, opioids, and hallucinogens.

Stimulants are substances like ecstasy and nicotine, while depressants include alcohol and sleeping pills. Opioids are drugs such as pain medication and heroin. Examples of hallucinogens are LSD, magic mushrooms, ecstasy and cannabis. Additionally, pain medication, when taken correctly, can be innocuous, just like sleeping pills.
