Psychotic Disorders

Psychotic Disorders | Psychiatry Journal | Psychiatry Researches

Psychotic disorders are severe mental disorders that cause abnormal thinking and perceptions. When a psychotic episode occurs, a person becomes unsure about what is real and what is not real and usually experiences hallucinations, delusions, off-the-wall behavior, chaotic speech and incoherency. Schizophrenia is one type of psychotic disorder. However, these symptoms can occur in people with other health problems, including bipolar disorder, dementia, substance abuse disorders, or brain tumors. Treatment may include antipsychotic medication, counselling, and social support. Early treatment appears to improve outcomes. Medications appear to have a moderate effect. Outcomes depend on the underlying cause.
