Echocardiogram is referred as cardiac echo which simply known as sonogram of the heart. Echocardiography uses two dimensional, three dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound in order to create images of the heart.
It is one of the most widely used diagnostic tests used in cardiology. An echocardiogram can also give physicians other estimates of heart function, such as a calculation of the cardiac output, ejection fraction, and diastolic function (how well the heart relaxes).
The test is used to:
· Assess the overall function of the heart
· Determine the presence of many types of heart disease, such as valve disease, myocardial disease, pericardial disease, infective endocarditis, cardiac masses and congenital heart disease
· Follow the progress of valve disease over time
· Evaluate the effectiveness of your medical or surgical treatments
Echocardiography can help detect cardiomyopathies, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, and many others. The use of stress echocardiography may also help determine whether any chest pain or associated symptoms are related to heart disease. The biggest advantage to echocardiography is that it is not invasive (does not involve breaking the skin or entering body cavities) and has no known risks or side effects.
