Cardiac output

Cardiac output (CO) describes the volume of blood being pumped by the heart mainly by the left or right ventricle per unit time. And it is the term which is commonly used in the cardiac physiology.

Cardiac output is the product of the heart rate, or the number of heart beats per minute, and the stroke volume, which is the volume of blood pumped from the ventricle per beat.

There is an equation for cardiac output:

CO= HR × SV.

Where HR is Heart rate, SV is stroke volume.

Cardiac output is measured in the values of L/min. Normally for a healthy person the cardiac output rests at average of 5L/min, in which approximately the HR is 70 beats/min, and SV would be approximately 70 mL.

Cardiac output is a global blood flow parameter of interest in hemodynamics which is study of the flow of blood. The factors affecting stroke volume and heart rate also affect cardiac output.

Related measurements of cardiac output are Ejection fraction, cardiac input, cardiac index, and combined cardiac output.
