Picks disease

Picks disease is a rare condition that causes progressive and irreversible dementia. This disease is one of many types of dementias known as fronto-temporal dementia (FTD). Picks disease has specific pathology that is one of the causes of fronto-temporal lobar degeneration.  Unlike Alzheimer disease, picks disease typically presents with impairment of recent memory associated with entorhinal cortex and hippocampal dysfunction, Pick disease typically affects the frontal and/or anterolateral temporal lobes.

Behavior and personality changes are the most significant early symptoms in Picks disease; person may also experience language and neurological changes. Some of the examples are

·         abrupt mood changes

·         compulsive or inappropriate behavior

·         depression-like symptoms, such as disinterest in daily activities

·         withdrawal from social interaction

·         difficulty keeping a job

·         poor social skills

·         poor personal hygiene

·         repetitive behavior

·         inability to speak, difficulty speaking, or trouble understanding speech

·         shrinking vocabulary

·         accelerated memory loss

·         physical weakness
