Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is characterized by the attack of inflammation in the spinal cord and brain. It damages the myelin which is the protective covering of the nerve fiber.
The symptoms of the encephalomyelitis occur rapidly, symptoms such as the fatigue, vomiting, fever and in the serious cases it causes the coma. ADEM typically damages the white matter of the brain which leads to the neurological symptoms such as the loss of vision, and also leads to the point of the paralysis.
Treatment for the ADEM is done by suppressing the inflammation in the brain by using of the anti-inflammatory drugs such as the intravenous corticosteroids, methylprednisolone and by the oral corticosteroid. There is also the secondary treatment such as plasmapheresis when the corticosteroid fails to work this therapy is the secondary options to treatment.
