The lateral periodontal cyst is a non-inflammatory developmental cyst that arises from the epithelial post-functional dental lamina, which is a remnant from odontogenesis. It is usually asymptomatic and more commonly seen in middle-aged males. Lateral periodontal cysts are defined as nonkeratinized and noninflammatory developmental cysts located adjacent or lateral to the root of a vital tooth. These cysts arise along the lateral periodontium or within the bone between the roots of erupted vital teeth. The involved tooth is usually vital and has no indication for root canal treatment unless the signs of non-vital or necrotic pulpal tissue were confirmed.
