A toothache is a pain in and around the teeth and jaws. Toothache is caused because of tooth decay, a contamination, free or broken fillings, or retreating gums. A toothache may feel like a sharp pain or a dull ache. The tooth may be sensitive to pressure, heat, cold, or sweets. In cases of severe pain, identifying the problem tooth is often difficult.  Any patient with a toothache should see a dental specialist for analysis and treatment. Most toothaches deteriorate whenever left untreated.

Toothaches should professionally treated by a dental practitioner. Some methods helps to manage toothache until professional care is available includes rinsing with warm salt water, using dental floss to remove any food particles, applying a cold compress against the outside of the cheek, using clove oil to numb the gums.
