An oronasal fistula is a pathologic communication between the oral cavity and the anterior respiratory tract. They can develop secondary to trauma, neoplasia, immune-mediated disease and most commonly secondary to advanced periodontal disease. Oronasal fistulas occur most commonly in the area of the upper canines, and with less frequency in the incisor region. Food and oral fluids perculate in to the respiratory tract. Oronasal fistulas are more common. These lesions often appear as complications associated with dental extractions. To avoid these complications, all extraction sites should be closed using a well-designed mucogingival flap.
