Pericoronitis

Dentofacial Orthopedics journals | Pericoronitis research articles | Dental Research and Management

Pericoronitis also called as operculitis, is inflammation of the delicate tissues encompassing the crown of a partially erupted tooth including the gingiva (gums) and the dental follicle. The soft tissue covering erupted tooth is known as an operculum, a part which can be hard to access with ordinary oral hygiene methods. The term operculitis technically refers to inflammation of the operculum alone.

Pericoronitis is caused by a collection of microscopic organisms and debris underneath the operculum, or by mechanical injury for example biting the operculum with the opposing tooth. Pericoronitis is frequently connected with incompletely erupted and impacted mandibular third molars (lower wisdom teeth), often occurring at the age of wisdom tooth eruption. Food impaction causing periodontal pain, pulpitis from dental caries (tooth decay), and acute myofascial pain in temporomandibular joint disorder are other common reasons for Pericoronitis.
