Scaling and root planing is also known as conventional periodontal therapy, non-surgical periodontal therapy, or deep cleaning. It is a procedure involving removal of dental plaque and calculus from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. Scaling and root planing is sometimes followed by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery antimicrobials, systemic antibiotics, and host modulation, as needed on a case-by-case basis.
There are two types of scaling instruments they are
1. Scaling with hand-held instruments.
2. Scaling with ultrasonic instruments.
