Congenital epulis (CE) is also known as granular cell tumor or congenital gingival granular cell tumor. It is a benign tumor of the oral cavity, found rarely in newborn. Congenital epulis is a proliferation of cells most frequently occurring on the alveolar ridge of the upper jaw at birth. Less frequently the mass may arise from the mandibular alveolus. Rare cases can arise from the tongue. This lesion is more commonly found in female babies, suggesting hormonal involvement during embryonic development. Congenital epulis may lead to mechanical obstruction, therefore resulting in respiratory distress and difficulty in feeding. Treatment involves surgical excision, and recurrences are rare.
