Alkenes are organic compounds that consist of carbon and hydrogen atoms with one or more carbon-carbon double bonds in their chemical structure. They are also known as olefins. The words alkene and olefin are often used interchangeably. Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons. They are hydrocarbons because they are made of only carbon and hydrogen atoms, and they are unsaturated because they have one or more double bonds in their chemical structure. Acyclic alkenes, with only one double bond and no other functional groups, known as mono-enes which form a homologous series of hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n. Alkenes have two hydrogen atoms fewer than the corresponding alkane (with the same number of carbon atoms). Aromatic compounds are often drawn as cyclic alkenes, but their structure and properties are different and they are not considered to be alkenes.
