Coordination number is also called as Ligancy. It is the number of atoms, ions, or molecules that a central atom or ion holds as its nearest neighbours in a complex or coordination compound or in a crystal. In chemistry and crystallography, the coordination number describes the number of neighbor atoms with respect to a central atom. The value of the coordination number is determined differently for crystals and molecules. The value depends on the relative sizes of the central atom and ligands and by the charge from the electronic configuration of an ion. The coordination number can vary from as low as 2 to as high as 16. For molecules and polyatomic ions the coordination number of an atom is determined by simply counting the other atoms to which it is bonded
