Femtochemistry is the area of physical chemistry that studies chemical reactions on extremely short timescales i.e. approximately 10−15 seconds or one femtosecond in order to study the very act of atoms within molecules (reactants) rearranging themselves to form new molecules (products).The most common and simplest technique used in femtochemistry is Pump-probe spectroscopy. Application of femtochemistry in biological studies has also helped to explain the conformational dynamics of stem-loop RNA structures. Femtochemistry helps in understanding the basics behind any chemical reaction, its observations help us in understanding why certain reactions take place and why certain chemical reactions fail to complete. Femtochemistry also explains why speed and the outcome of the reaction are temperature dependent.
