Edelweiss Chemical Science Journal (ISSN 2641-7383)
In
Chemistry, Catalysis
is the process of increasing the rate of a chemical reaction by
adding a substance known as a catalyst. A
catalyst decreases the activation energy of a chemical reaction. It participates
in reactions but is neither reactants nor products of the reaction they
catalyze. The rates of
chemical reaction that is, the velocities at which they occur depend upon a
number of factors, including the chemical nature of the reacting species and
the external conditions to which they are exposed.
In
general, chemical reaction occurs faster in the presence of a catalyst because the
catalyst provides an alternative reaction mechanism with lower activation
energy than the non-catalyzed
mechanism. In catalyzed mechanisms, the catalyst usually reacts to form a
temporary intermediate, which then regenerates the original catalyst in a
cyclic process.
