Hydroxyl groups

Journals on Hydroxyl groups | Alkynes Research articles | Edelweiss Chemical Science

A hydroxy or hydroxyl group is the entity with the formula OH. It contains oxygen bonded to hydrogen. In organic chemistry, alcohol and carboxylic acids contain hydroxy groups. The anion [OH-], called hydroxide, consists of a hydroxy group. Hydroxyl groups are a functional group found in sugars and alcohols. A hydroxyl group consists of one hydrogen and one oxygen atom and can be written as either -OH or HO-. Hydroxyl groups are polar and the oxygen side is always negative, while the hydrogen side is always positive. The electronegativity of the oxygen adds a slight polarity to alcohols, which is why they are able to interact with other polar molecules such as water and some solutes.
