Mesomeric effect is defined as the polarity produced in the molecule by the interaction of two pi bonds or between a pi bond and lone pair of electrons present on an adjacent atom. The mesomeric effect in chemistry is a property of substituents or functional groups in a chemical compound. The mesomeric effect is nothing but the movement of π electrons toward or away from a substituent group. The mesomeric effect is transmitted through whole of the conjugated system and thus effect may also be called as conjugative effect.
Mesomeric effect is of two types, +M and -M .It is said to be +M if electron pair is transferred away from the atom. When electron pair is transferred towards the atom, it is said to be –M.
