Precipitation is the
creation of a solid from a solution. When the
reaction occurs in a liquid solution, the solid formed is called the precipitate. The
chemical that causes the solid to form is called the precipitant. Often the
precipitate emerges as a suspension. Precipitates can also form when the
temperature of a solution is lowered. Lower temperatures reduce the solubility
of salts, which may result in their precipitation as solids.
Precipitation
may indicate a chemical
reaction has occurred, but it may also occur if solute concentration
exceeds its solubility. Precipitation is preceded by an event called nucleation, which is
when small insoluble particles aggregate with each other or else form an
interface with a surface, such as the wall of a container or a seed crystal.
